The Republic of Ireland International made his Premier League début in 2008 against Stoke City, and became renowned for his long range pile drivers, which sometimes flew gracefully into the back of the opposition net, and sometimes ended up in the stadiums car park. However, Gibson's games in the Premier League were limited to 30 appearances and was more often a feature in United's League Cup fixtures.
Despite some impressive performances, many United fans felt that he was simply not good enough to feature regularly in the competitive central midfield position in the United side, and this is a view clearly now shared with the Manchester United management. Gibson will be shipped to Sunderland who have a vacant central role after selling Jordan Henderson to Liverpool for £20 million. Gibson will be hoping to prove himself and forge a career, fulfilling the potential that won him the Manchester United Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year Award in 2006, an award previously won by the likes of Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes.
