Arsenal Injury Curse: Vermaelen 2 months Out

Arsenal's extremely unfortunate and rather unbelievable injury troubles continued today with news that their Belgian central defender, thought to be the backbone in the Arsenal side will miss the next two months after undergoing surgery on his Achilles injury.

According to the Mirror, who correctly broke the news on Jack Wilshere's latest injury, claim that Vermaelen underwent surgery on Monday night and "could" miss the next 8 weeks of action.

Vermaelen's injury stems back to this time last year when he picked up the original Achilles injury on international duty with Belgium, with Sebastian Squillaci preparing for his Arsenal debut. Wenger claimed that "Vermaelen's [injury] should be short-term."

Wenger's prophecy clearly ended up incorrect, with his central defender only playing five games last season, with his absence thought to be a big reason why the clubs fortunes nose dived in the second half of the season.

He played against Udinese on 24th August, but came off with an unspecified injury which "worried" Arsene Wenger. He then missed the humiliating 8 - 2 loss to Manchester United, and now the news has emerged of the severity of his Achilles heel.

There will be relief in the Arsenal camp that a defender was brought in during the summer in the form of Per Mertesacker, and with Koscielny, Djourou, Squillaci and Miquel all capable of filling in at the back, but the absence of Vermaelen is a massive blow nevertheless.
