After three games without a win, including an 8 - 2 demolition at the hands of high flyers Manchester United, the Arsenal squad were carrying a lot of damaging demons, and a boost was needed to get the players back on track and ready for the season ahead.
With their Champions League campaign soon to kick off mid-week against a very exciting, young German team in Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal needed all the momentum they could muster, and Wenger believes the Arshavin winner at the week-end is enough at this moment. He said:
"The confidence is back now. [We] had not won yet in the league and that had played a big part in our head. In our job, momentum is vital."
"We just want to play to win. When you look back when we travelled to Udinese [for the Champions League play-off] everyone expected us to win the game and we did, we want the same against Dortmund."Tuesday's game against Dortmund is the first of Group F, and will perhaps be the biggest challenge for Arsenal. They have already been embarrassed by a young side full tot he rim with potential in Manchester United, but as Wenger said at the time, that was a special circumstance. While the German side pose a tough, attacking threat, Arsenal will be expecting a decent performance and hoping for a win.
Dortmund currently sit in 11th place in the German Bundesliga - the same position Arsenal find themselves in the Premier League - after a 1 - 2 loss at home to Hertha Berlin on Saturday, so Arsenal will expect to face a side with around the same, mediocre confidence levels as them - a bonus for the Gunners.
Victory could see an upward change in Arsenal's season, while a loss could prove to have the opposite effect. Check back here on Tuesday night to watch the goals, presuming that there is some.
