Andrei Arshavin took advantage of an awkward Michel Vorm throw, which rebounded off his defender's heel and into the Russian attackers path just before half time. Arsenal were able to hold out for their first win of this season, and a bounce-back of sorts from their humiliation against Manchester United, a game which will, unfortunately for Arsenal, be a reference point to everyone for the rest of the year and beyond.
Three of Arsenal's summer signings, Mikel Arteta, and Per Mertesacker started for the first time in a Gunners shirt, and impressed Arsene Wenger, while former Chelsea and Liverpool midfielder Yossi Benayoun came off the bench for his debut. Of Arteta, he said:
"He is a class act. He had a very good first half and overall he did very well. You could see he has all the ingredients to be a perfect Arsenal player."While on the German centre back, Wenger commented:
Mertesacker was calm and composed. He needs to adapt to the pace of the game but he looks very intelligent in his positioning.'
