With Paul Scholes' departure from the United first team-set up at the end of last season, there would always be a new face in the middle of the squad, and 22 year-old Cleverley is that man. With all of the pressure of being the one who is supposed to step in to a United legends position, you would forgive for being just slightly daunted by the big task ahead, but the attention doesn't seem to have affected United's number 23. He said:
"Personally and on a team scale, things have gone exactly how I hoped. I am in the team and I have got to look to stay there now. That was always my aim. Maybe it has happened a bit quicker than I thought, but to be playing and winning games and to have made the start we have is ideal."
"As long as I am playing well, people will say nice things about you," he continued. "I don't really feel the pressure. I have been at the club a long time and I know what is expected of a Manchester United player – it is how you are brought up at this club. I just have to keep it going."The game against Bolton on Saturday will see Cleverley make his fourth Premier League start for Manchester United, and he is, naturally, ready for the physical side thanks to his experience at last seasons relegation strugglers Wigan. As a result of his valuable loan move, he is no stranger to tough tussles with physically strong opposition, saying:
"Bolton are a more physical side but this is why I went to Wigan last year. I played against teams like Bolton and Stoke – some of the more physical sides."
"It benefitted me massively experience-wise. Playing in the Premier League every week, having the pressure of getting results, even though it was at the different end of the table, helped me when I went into United's team this year."
"Whatever the league has to throw at me, I am ready for. If we play well I am sure we will get a positive result."If the midfielder continues to impress Sir Alex Ferguson and the country as a whole, especially those who may have heard little of him before his break into the United first team, he will soon firmly establish himself at the top. He has a fantastic attitude and need to win, recently being called up the the England squad by youth seeking Fabio Capello.
In other news, Antonia Valencia will be back in the Manchester United squad against Bolton after suffering an injury whilst on International duty for Equador in the Copa America. It gives the United manager further selection problems thanks to the recent addition and marvellous performances from a certain Ashley Young.
Three wins so far, 13 goals scored including an 8 - 2 demolition of Arsenal, and Manchester United sit top of the Premier League. More of the same please!
