Arsenal's Interest In Odemwingie & Eto'o

As I reported in a post yesterday, Peter Odemwingie of West Brom has been left a little angry and frustrated by Arsenal's wage offer which the Nigerian striker considered as "peanuts". There was a mixed reception to the comments from a source close to the player, with some Arsenal fans similarly as dissatisfied as Odemwingie with the offer, saying that the West Brom striker is a very good player and one who could add a lot to the Arsenal side - more than the outgoing and higher paid Nicklas Bendtner. Others felt that that Odemwingie wasn't worth Arsenal's interest, and felt he should take the chance of an Arsenal offer immediately simply because it is a massive opportunity, despite the wage differences.

There was also however, a small outcry for Wenger to pull his finger out and try and spend some money on his main targets, rather than rubbing the club and the player up the wrong way by offering money which isn't substantial for either the player or the club.

Odemwingie's attitude towards his offer doesn't really spell good news for any possible Arsenal offer for Samuel Eto'o, who has expressed an interest in transferring to the Premier League. The Inter Milan striker said: “I am now 30 years old and it is very important for me to think about my future before I sign what could be my last contract. I have already shown that I have what it takes to play in Italy and I now have the idea of proving myself in England.”

While Eto'o isn't a typical Wenger signing considering his age, the Cameroon international has what many Arsenal fans have been crying out for for a while; world class, experience and a proven goalscorer. It is in stark contrast to Nicklas Bendtner, who has hardly shown the goalscoring form which Arsenal look for to pair Robin van Persie up front. Having a three time Champions League winner, with 250 professional goals to his name throughout a 15 year period as well as several Championship trophies in Spain and Italy is an immediate attraction for Arsenal.

However, if Arsenal cannot even offer Peter Odemwingie a salary which satisfies him, or surpasses a newly promoted club in West Brom in a wage offer, how will Wenger react to Eto'o's huge wage demands? The former Barcelona striker gets paid around £7 million a year at Inter, and although Arsenal have been given the backing by shareholders financially, that is a wage packet which Wenger may not approve of.

Arsenal spent £111 million on wages in 2009, and earlier this year, the only Arsenal player in the top 50 football earners was Andrey Arshavin, who came in at number 47, earning just over £4 million per year. With Samir Nasri's current demands, an Arsenal player may soo be going up in those rankings, but with Eto'o up in 4th place behind Ronaldo, Messi and Ibrahimovich, it looks as if Eto'o would be out of Arsenal's league unless the player is prepared to take a massive pay cut.

At the moment, we don't know how much Arsenal offered Odemwingie in wages; it could be that the player is a little over ambitious, or over rated himself, and is being greedy. We also don't know if Arsenal have shown any interest in Samuel Eto'o; it could be that Arsenal will come back with an improved bid for Odemwingie, or perhaps focus on bringing Radamel Falcao to the Emirates.

So despite all the speculation surrounding Samuel Eto'o's future, I think it is highly unlikely that Arsenal, and Wenger in particularly, would be prepared to break the bank and splash out a huge amount for the striker, but instead going for a lesser high profile player with lower wage demands. That, although some may be disappointed is by no means another Wenger bottler, because there would be very few clubs out there willing to equal or top the millions in salary.

Odemwingie "not happy" With Arsenal Offer

It is well known that Arsenal and Arsene Wenger do not spend significant amounts of money, and keep a more sensible and lower wage structure than other top Premier League sides, but Peter Odemwingie, West Brom's star striker was apparently offered a salary worth "peanuts" to him.

As a determined to leave Nicklas Bendtner is receiving bids from clubs like Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal are looking to replace him, and one of Wenger's immediate targets was the Nigerian striker, Peter Odemwingie. The fifth top scorer in the Premier League last season, with 15 goals - 2 against Arsenal, the 29 year-old would have been a good acquisition at only £4 million.

But it has emerged from a source close to the player, that although Wenger was willing to spend the £4 million, or whatever transfer fee West Brom were looking for, the wages that Arsenal offered Odemwingie were far from what he had hoped. The source, said:
"Peter is not happy that, while the Gunners are willing to meet West Brom’s transfer fee, there will not be much change in his personal terms."
“The club are proposing what he considers to be peanuts for him.”
In other words, Odemwingie saw moving to a bigger club meant bigger wages - wages which would surpass what he is currently getting paid by West Brom. He was wrong. The Daily Star does not rule out a move to Arsenal for Odemwingie, but does state that Tottenham may take advantage of Arsenal's weak offer.

Arsenal may have bigger and better things to contend with however, with the recent reports that Radamel Falcao may be made available for transfer. A move to Chelsea seems more likely though, and although there is plenty of time left in the summer transfer window, Arsenal may have to settle with Lille's Ivorian striker Gervinho, is is edging closer to a move by the day.

Radamel Falcao Available for Arsenal & Chelsea?

Premier League clubs will have been taking a keen interest in the appointment of FC Porto's Andre Villas-Boas as Chelsea manager, with some of Porto's players perhaps ready to follow in the 33 year-old manager's footsteps and join the Premier League. In particular, Porto's star striker, Radamel Falcao, who has been interesting both Arsenal and Chelsea specifically.

Chelsea would of course, be the immediate favourites, as they could use their new manager, Villas-Boas as bait, who could be a direct link and companion in a new country for Falcao. The 25 year-old striker had a fantastic season with Porto with his manager, and has a good relationship with him, as well as a clearly successful one, so if the offer of a partnership were to arise, Falcao, who has admitted that he would "like to experience" being at one of the "big English clubs like Arsenal and Tottenham" recently, would of course jump at the chance of signing for a top Premier League side.

Another factor which may end up swinging away from Arsenal and towards Chelsea in the race to sign Falcaou is his asking price. Falcao has a release clause in his contract of £26.5 million, which so far has not been matched, but if it were to be, Porto will have to allow negotiations to occur.

Arsenal, under the guidance of Arsene Wenger are often reluctant to spend big amounts of money, while the new Chelsea manager will most certainly be given a healthy balance by Roman Abramovich to propel the team to Champions League glory. However, Wenger has been given a substantial amount of backing by certain Arsenal shareholders this summer, so if Wenger were to see Falcao as a future Arsenal player, it seems he has the money to make it happen.

Arsenal are close to capturing Lille's Ivorian forward Gervinho, but as Nicklas Bendtner seems certain to leave the club, Arsenal may well be looking for some further additions to the front line, especially considering their previous bad fortune with injuries and bad form with van Persia and Marouanne Chamakh respectively.

Likewise, with Chelsea's forward line getting increasingly older, as well as some whispers that Didier Drogba could be on his way, Falcao, who scored 38 goals in 42 appearances last season would be an excellent acquisition for the London side.
The players agent, Claudio Mossi said of any possible Chelsea interest:
"If Villas-Boas is the new coach of Chelsea it is normal for players that are closest to follow him."
"But at the moment I have not heard from anyone from Chelsea, although the player would like such a destination."
While he explained the situation about Arsenal and Tottenham's interest in Falcao:
"These clubs [Arsenal and Tottenham] are always interested, but they have been blocked by Porto's €30 million [£26.5m] release clause."
